Academic Conference on 20 & 21 October, 2022

Mapping Regional Involvement in EU Affairs

The conference is organized by the REGIOPARL | Regional Parliaments Lab research project at Danube University Krems, Department for European Policy and the Study of Democracy

The last decades have witnessed growing attention to the regional involvement in EU affairs and an increasing regional focus in research on the interplay of the EU and its member states. In this context, REGIOPARL will organise its final academic conference from 20-21 October 2022 in Krems (Austria) under the title “Mapping regional involvement in EU affairs”. The aim of the conference is to discuss research concerning regional authorities’ participation in EU decision-making from different perspectives and academic disciplines.

The conference organizers are interested in research that:

  • broadens the geographical scope of empirical analysis towards the rarely studied and less powerful regions from non-federal, centralist member state, including from Eastern Europe,
  • considers not only institutional rights and opportunities but focuses on actual behavior and activities of regional level political actors and institutions,
  • studies various types of regional political actors, including governments, parliaments, and administrations both at the collective (institutions) and individual level,
  • reviews potential implications of political claims for stronger regional EU involvement, and
  • examines the supposed closeness of regional actors to EU citizens in the multi-level context.
